Centro Histórico

If you prefer other accommodations, Centro Histórico offers plenty of beautiful boutique hotels, cafés, and restaurants—all within walking distance from Fiesta Americana.

Oaxaca International Airport (OAX)

All guests will fly into Oaxaca International Airport (OAX), located about 20 minutes from the city center.

There are direct flights from Houston (IAH), Dallas (DFW) and Mexico City (MEX), while Austin flights connect through either Houston (IAH), Dallas (DFW) or Mexico City (MEX).

Travelers coming from other cities can also connect through Mexico City (MEX), which has several daily direct flights to Oaxaca (OAX).

Recommended Travel Itinerary

We recommend arriving by Thursday, November 5th, to join us for the Calenda and Welcome Cocktail on Friday evening and departing on Monday, November 9th, as the wedding celebration on Saturday will go late into the night (or early into the dawn on Sunday lol).

Note: There are no Ubers in Oaxaca. Upon airport arrival, use a shared shuttle or arrange a private transfer. For help with transportation, contact our planner, Friederike, at oaxacadestinationweddings@gmail.com.

Travel Tips

✅ Be sure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates.

💵 We suggest carrying pesos for taxis and small purchases, as not all vendors accept cards. You can also withdraw pesos at ATMs in Centro.

✈️ Oaxaca’s small airport makes for an easy arrival, but plan to arrive at least TWO HOURS BEFORE YOUR RETURN FLIGHT for check-in.

💬 Consider downloading WhatsApp—it’s the most common way locals and hotels communicate.

Travel Documents

Please ensure you bring all required travel documents such as a valid passport for international travel.

Appropriate Shoes

Please opt for thicker or block heels, as portions of our reception venue will be on uneven ground.

Warm Outer Layer

Our wedding reception will be outdoors, and evenings in Oaxaca can get a bit chilly (mid 50s to low 60s). We’ll have a tent and heaters, but we still recommend bringing a warm layer just to be comfortable throughout the night.

Things To Do During Your Visit

Beach Escape

If you’re extending your stay, consider heading to the coast. Puerto Escondido offers a laid-back surf feel, while Huatulco provides quieter, resort-style beaches. Both are easy to reach by a short flight, or you can drive to Puerto Escondido in about 2.5–3 hours via the new coastal highway.

Explore Oaxaca City

Oaxaca is rich with culture, markets, mezcal, and historic sites. Our wedding planner put together a curated PDF to help you discover the best experiences.

Where to Eat & Drink

From street food to rooftop restaurants, Oaxaca’s dining scene is unforgettable — with incredible moles, fresh tortillas, and signature mezcal. We’ve included our favorite spots for every style of meal.

Dress Code & Weather

What is the dress code?
Formal attire

What will the weather look like?
Expect warm days and cooler evenings. Bring a light layer for nights as it will get chilly in the evening.

Money Matters

Can I use U.S. dollars, or should I exchange money?
Pesos (MXN) are easiest. Most places accept credit cards, but we recommend withdrawing pesos from ATMs for small purchases and tips.

Is tipping expected?
Yes—generally 10–15% at restaurants and cash tips for drivers and hotel staff. Many spots include a service line; check the bill. For the wedding reception, its customary to tip $5-$10 per couple to your waiter if you enjoyed your service.

Health, Safety & Water

Is it safe?
Oaxaca’s historic center is lively and welcoming. As with any city, stay aware of belongings, use marked taxis, and travel in small groups at night.

Is the water safe to drink?
Drink bottled or filtered water. All host hotels and venues will provide safe drinking water. Tap water is not safe to drink, unless specially noted to be filtered.

Are there other safety or health considerations?
We recommend travel insurance, sun protection, and comfortable walking shoes (cobblestones!).

Language & Connectivity

Do I need to speak Spanish?
Not required. Basic phrases go a long way, however staff in hotels/restaurants often speak English.

Will my phone and internet work there?
We recommend checking with your cellphone service provider, but most phones with eSIM are able to connect to internet in Mexico without any additional steps. Most hotels and restaurants have free WiFi.

Power & Packing

What should I pack?
Passport, comfortable walking shoes, sun hat, sunscreen/bug spray, light evening layer, dress attire, swimsuit, and any prescriptions.

Mexico uses Type A/B outlets (same as U.S.), 110V—no converter needed for U.S. plugs.
